Human Ecology and Built Environment
Discussing the Sensorial
National University of Singapore, Singapore
Mentor: Dr. Ruzica Bozovic Stamenovic
Human ecology is the ongoing attempt to formulate, synthesize, and apply theory to bridge the widening schism between man and his living environment. human ecology emphasizes complexity over reductionism, focuses on changes over stable states, and expands ecological concepts beyond plants and animals to include people and their built environment
So what is this study actually about?
WHAT
Establishing basic understanding of multiple relations between
human ecology, human’s health and built spaces
HOW
By relating the subject of health to planning, urbanism, research,
design, organization, function, interior and product design.
WHY
The broad approach is essential for critical examination of the
environment and influences on health and healing.
We analyzed senses that reveal the built environment's physical properties

Site reveals it's location, size and shape

Hearing reveals the space as hollow, crowded , vast or intimate

Touch tells us whether it's rough or smooth ; warm or cool

Smell hints at the kind of activities within
Higher senses that depend upon the healthy development of the foundational senses of balance and wellness.

Sense of Phoneme or Language

Sense of Thought or Concept

Explorations from the study
Sensorial architecture in Singapore
For the sensorial analysis of spaces in Singapore, two different projects of varying scales were chosen to be able to understand the layers and complexities involved in the way we perceive architecture.
The first location is the dynamic “Little India Arcade’ on Serangoon Road.
The second location is a quaint mosque on Admiralty Lane.
The architecture, intense play of water light, and sound make the journey through the mosque a divine experience.

Sensorial realm of SDE,NUS
The building beautifully resonates with the tropical climate of Singapore and sits majestically in a lush green backdrop.
From a distance, it seems like a revalidated grammar of tropical architecture.
Partially hidden in a facade of green, it induces a sense of curiosity and sense of exploration in the visitor, making it a pleasant and mysterious experience for anyone viewing it from a distance.
However, in the current state of accessibility to the site, the experience is not as enjoyable as it was intended to be.

Feeding the Future
Adding Cities to Farms!
Feeding the future is a new visionary model for the development of off-grid, integrated, and resilient agro clusters that can power and feed self-reliant families around the world.
The concept has a holistic approach and combines a variety of innovative technologies, such as energy positive homes, renewable energy, energy storage, door-step high-yield organic food production, vertical farming aquaponics/aeroponics, water management, and waste-to-resource systems.
